History

College Hill became the seventh Methodist church in Wichita when it organized and held the first public worship in August 1907, in a white frame cottage at the corner of Douglas and Chautauqua streets. The Rev. A.E. Hoyt organized this gathering. Soon after, 45 persons launched their new church under the name of College Hill Methodist Episcopal Church. On charter day, May 1, 1908, a total of 107 names were entered on the charter and the Rev. William T. Ward was appointed the first minister.

In 1916 the red brick sanctuary was constructed at the corner of 1st and Erie streets, after having worshipped for several years in the Ward Auditorium. The memorial window presented by Mrs. S.R. Van Landingham is now a part of the chapel in our educational building.

The present Educational Building was completed in 1949. The present sanctuary was completed in October 1960. Just as it was encouraged at its birth by First United Methodist in downtown Wichita, over the years, it has sponsored five other churches in Wichita - Dellrose UMC, East Heights UMC, Epworth UMC, Mt. Vernon UMC, and University UMC.

We give thanks to God for the wonderful heritage that is ours and commit ourselves to living out the love of Christ today and every day.
