College Hill United Methodist Church Environmental Committee (CHUMEC)

As stewards of the Earth, CHUMEC endeavors to guide CHUM, it's members and friends, in the quest for responsible and spiritual care of our environment to:

  1. Provide recycling for CHUM members, friends and neighbors,

  2. Develop CHUM into an environmentally responsible facility, and

  3. Establish CHUM as a community focal point for environmental discussions, displays, and education.

 

The Definitive List for CHUM Recyclers:

 

Plastics: Please separate lids (mixed plastic)

  • # 1 Clear plastic bottles- soda, water, ketchup, peanut butter

  • #2 Cloudy jugs- milk, water, juice, vinegar (w/ seam on bottom)

  • #2 Solid Color- laundry detergent, bleach, shampoo (seam also)

  • Mixed 4,5,7 ( No 3’s PVC or 6 Polystyrene foam)

  • Margarine tubs, yogurt cups, produce clamshells, convenience containers

  • Plastic bags- grocery sacks no crunchy liner bags with seam down back

Paper:

  • Corrugated cardboard- heavy, clean, and flat; also brown paper bags
    Office paper-white and pastel, envelopes, stationary, and reports

  • Mixed paper/ Junk mail-shoe and cereal boxes, inner rolls of toilet paper, phone books, shredded paper, gift wrap

  • Magazines/Catalogs-shiny/glossy pages no newspaper inserts

  • Newspapers-with inserts and ads

  • Books- hard or soft back no metal or plastic bindings

Glass:

  • All colors labels not need be removed (lids separate in tin can area)

  • No mirrors, windshields, or light bulbs

Metals:

  • Aluminum- rinsed out cans, pie pans, and clean pieces of foil

    • Can still be brought in any time.

  • Tin/Steel- cans and lids labels need not be removed

Batteries of all kinds –no leaking ones.
Ink Cartridges
Eye glass frames- Lions Club
Cellular phones working or not-YWCA


BIG NOs:

  • Glass that wasn’t originally a food or beverage container.
    PVC and Styrofoam

  • Non-container plastics- toys, vinyl, hoses, siding, pipe

  • Nothing dirty or with food in it

  • NO Hazardous wastes- these can be managed at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 801 Stillwell here in Wichita. 660-7464
