United Methodist Women - UMW
Purpose of United Methodist Women
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose
PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus
Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of
mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
United Methodist Women is a part of the General Board of Global Ministries of
the United Methodist Church. We are dedicated to helping women, youth, and
children throughout the world as they strive to live healthy lives of dignity
and hope.
In the days before American women were allowed to have careers outside the home,
there were women of conscience who wished to serve as missionaries. Unless
these women were married to men who served in the mission field, they were not
allowed to serve as missionaries. Thus was born the legacy of what we now
call United Methodist Women.
We are women of conscience who call the leadership of our denomination to
accountability when issues of social justice are being ignored. We have
spoken out against slavery and child workers, for women's rights in issues of
choice, living wages, prison ministry, ecological concerns, education and health
issues.
Each United Methodist church is expected to have a unit of United Methodist
Women. The units have small groups, called Circles, where women come
together for fellowship, study, prayer and support. College Hill UMC has
three Circles, one that meets in the morning, one in the afternoon and one
evening circle. Please consider becoming part of this vital and busy organization
as we serve those who need to see the love of God made manifest in today's
world.
